Alenquer Red Altifrons Eartheater (Geophagus altifrons)
The Alenquer Red Altifrons Eartheater is a stunning and highly sought-after variant of Geophagus altifrons, prized for its elegant shape and rich red/orange coloration. Originating from the Alenquer region of the Amazon Basin, this strain develops vibrant reddish hues across the face, fins, and body, often accented by subtle blue iridescence and natural patterning.
Known for their graceful swimming style and signature “eartheating” behavior, these cichlids constantly sift through substrate in search of food, creating a dynamic and natural display. Their elongated fins, shimmering scales, and peaceful temperament make them a standout centerpiece in South American biotope aquariums.
Despite their size, they are among the more peaceful large cichlids, though they still exhibit mild territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
Care & Husbandry
Tank Size:
A minimum of 75 gallons is suitable for juveniles, though 125+ gallons is strongly recommended for adult groups. These fish do best in groups of 5 or more, which helps reduce aggression and encourages natural behavior.
Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for varied, high-quality foods:
- High-quality cichlid pellets (staple diet)
- Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp
- Live foods for conditioning and enrichment
- Occasional vegetable matter
Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring food reaches the substrate.
Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful for their size:
- Compatible: Other Geophagus, severums, angelfish, peaceful cichlids, larger tetras, catfish
- Use Caution: More aggressive cichlids that may outcompete or bully them
- Avoid: Small fish (may be eaten), highly aggressive or overly territorial species
Best kept with calm to semi-peaceful tank mates.

- Driftwood, rocks, and open swimming areas recommended
