Asian Bumblebee Catfish (Pseudomystus siamensis)
Asian Bumblebee Catfish — Pseudomystus siamensis
Bold stripes in a compact predator package
The Asian Bumblebee Catfish is a small but striking species known for its sharp black-and-golden banding. Its high-contrast stripes resemble a bumblebee pattern, making it stand out dramatically against dark substrate or planted backgrounds. With long flowing barbels and a sleek body shape, this catfish brings predator energy in a compact size.
Native to slow-moving rivers and flooded forest systems of Southeast Asia, Pseudomystus siamensis is primarily nocturnal. During the day, it prefers shaded hiding spots among driftwood or caves. At night, it becomes more active, patrolling the lower water column in search of food. Though small, it is still a true carnivore and will eat appropriately sized tank mates.
Growing to about 3–4 inches, this species is ideal for medium-sized community setups where its bold pattern and nighttime activity can shine.
