Emerald cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis)

Emerald cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis)

Emerald Cichlid — Hypselecara temporalis
The gentle giant of South America

The Emerald Cichlid is a large South American species known for calm behavior and rich natural coloration. Its base tone ranges from olive-gold to bronze, overlaid with shimmering turquoise and green iridescence that glows under proper lighting — giving the fish its “emerald” appearance. Mature specimens develop thicker lips and a strong forehead profile, creating a dignified presence without looking overly aggressive.

Native to slow rivers and floodplain habitats of the Amazon basin, this species spends most of its time calmly cruising and observing rather than chasing tank mates. It communicates through posture and color shifts instead of constant fighting, making it one of the best large cichlids for balanced community setups.

Growing to about 10–12 inches, the Emerald Cichlid pairs well with other peaceful but confident species such as severums, eartheaters, larger tetras, catfish, and rays. Provide open swimming space with wood structure and it quickly becomes comfortable and interactive, often recognizing feeding routines and approaching the glass.

Breeding pairs display excellent parental care, guarding eggs and fry attentively while maintaining their composed demeanor.
