L004 Angelicus Pleco (Hypancistrus sp L004)

L004 Angelicus Pleco (Hypancistrus sp L004)

L004 Angelicus Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L004)

The L004 Angelicus Pleco is a striking and highly sought-after member of the Hypancistrus genus, prized for its deep black base coloration covered in crisp white to cream spotting. Often compared to the more common L201, the Angelicus stands out with its bold contrast and clean, evenly distributed pattern that gives it a refined, almost celestial appearance.

Native to fast-flowing regions of the Rio Negro basin, this species thrives in well-oxygenated environments and brings both beauty and functionality to the aquarium. Unlike many common plecos, the Angelicus remains relatively compact and does not develop into an oversized tank burden, making it ideal for serious aquarists looking for a manageable, high-end bottom-dweller.

Peaceful but territorial toward its own kind, the L004 is best appreciated as either a single specimen or in carefully structured groups with ample hiding spaces.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 30 gallons is suitable for a single specimen, though 40–55 gallons is recommended for long-term care or multiple individuals. Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and shaded areas.

Diet:
Primarily carnivorous/omnivorous with a strong preference for protein:

  • High-quality sinking carnivore pellets (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp
  • Repashy or gel foods for variety
  • Occasional vegetable matter (zucchini, cucumber) though not a primary requirement

Feed in the evening or at night, as they are most active after lights out.

Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful with other species but territorial with similar plecos:

  • Compatible: Tetras, rasboras, angelfish, discus, gouramis, and other peaceful community fish
  • Use Caution: Other Hypancistrus or similar plecos unless ample space and caves are provided
  • Avoid: Highly aggressive fish or species that may outcompete them for food

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 78–84°F
  • pH: 5.5–7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Strong filtration and high oxygenation are essential
  • Moderate to strong flow is highly beneficial

Additional Notes

  • Maximum Size: ~4–5 inches
  • Lifespan: 8–12+ years with proper care
  • Behavior: Nocturnal, shy, cave-dwelling
  • Breeding: Possible in captivity with stable, warm, and clean water conditions
