Leopard Synodontis (Synodontis pardalis)
Leopard Synodontis — Synodontis pardalis
Spotted armor with African river character
The Leopard Synodontis is a beautifully patterned African catfish known for its bold, irregular spotting that resembles a leopard’s coat. A warm tan to bronze base is layered with dark brown to black spots that extend across the body and fins, creating high contrast against the fish’s armored frame. Long barbels and sturdy pectoral spines give it the rugged, river-built look typical of the genus.
Native to Central and West African river systems, Synodontis pardalis is primarily nocturnal but will often become active during the day once settled. It patrols the bottom and midwater, weaving through rockwork and driftwood with confidence. Like many Synodontis species, it may occasionally swim upside down while feeding — a classic trait that adds personality to its behavior.
Growing to approximately 6–8 inches, the Leopard Synodontis is a manageable yet substantial bottom-dweller suitable for medium to large aquariums.
