Xingu Blue Lip Eartheater Cichlid (Geophagus argyrostictus)
Xingu Blue Lip Eartheater — Geophagus argyrostictus
Subtle color, constant motion
The Xingu Blue Lip Eartheater is a refined South American cichlid prized for natural behavior and understated beauty. Collected from the clear, rocky tributaries of Brazil’s Rio Xingu, this species carries a soft silver-beige body dusted with fine metallic spotting and highlighted by its signature electric blue lips and facial markings. Under warm lighting the fins glow with delicate blue and orange accents, giving the fish a clean, polished appearance rather than loud coloration.
Like all true eartheaters, Geophagus argyrostictus lives through the substrate. It continuously scoops mouthfuls of sand, filtering edible particles while releasing clean grains through its gills. A group working together creates a mesmerizing rhythm that turns the aquarium into an active riverbed instead of a static display.
Growing to about 7–9 inches, they are peaceful for their size and ideal for large community aquariums. They pair exceptionally well with rays, arowana, larger tetras, severums, and other calm South American species, adding life without aggression. Their social hierarchy is structured but rarely violent, making them excellent group fish.
During breeding, colors intensify and pairs guard territories while still maintaining their composed temperament. Provide fine sand, stable water, and open swimming space and they reward keepers with nonstop natural interaction.
