Bulgarian Green Seal Point Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare sp)
Bulgarian Green Seal Point Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare sp.)
The Bulgarian Green Seal Point Angelfish is a rare and highly sought-after strain of Pterophyllum scalare, admired for its iridescent green sheen and distinctive “seal point” patterning. This variety features a luminous, pale body contrasted by darker shading along the face, fins, and edges—creating a subtle yet striking gradient effect that intensifies under proper lighting.
Originating from specialized European breeding programs, this angelfish combines refined coloration with the classic angelfish form—tall, laterally compressed bodies and elegant, flowing fins. The green iridescence gives it a unique, almost metallic glow that shifts depending on angle and light, making it a standout in any high-end freshwater setup.
Like all angelfish, this variety carries semi-aggressive cichlid traits and a natural predatory instinct, especially toward smaller tank inhabitants.
Care & Husbandry
Tank Size:
A minimum of 29 gallons for a single specimen is required, though 40–55+ gallons is recommended for pairs or groups. Taller aquariums are strongly preferred to support their vertical body shape and finnage.
Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong lean toward protein-rich foods:
- High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple diet)
- Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
- Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for conditioning and natural feeding behavior
- Occasional spirulina or vegetable-based foods for balance
Feed once or twice daily, avoiding overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Tank Mates:
Careful selection is important due to their temperament:
- Compatible: Larger tetras (bleeding heart, rummynose), rainbowfish, gouramis, Corydoras, plecos, and other semi-peaceful cichlids
- Use Caution: Other angelfish (may form pairs and become territorial), certain barbs depending on behavior
- Avoid: Small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras)
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76–82°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Stable, clean water with regular maintenance is essential
