Platinum Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Platinum Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Platinum Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

The Platinum Peruvian Altum Angelfish is a sleek, high-end variant of Pterophyllum scalare, bred to showcase the tall, dramatic profile of Altum angelfish while maintaining the resilience of tank-raised stock. This strain features a clean platinum-white body with subtle metallic sheen, giving it a bright, almost glowing appearance under aquarium lighting.

Often referred to as “Peruvian Altums,” these angelfish exhibit a more elongated body, higher dorsal fin, and extended finnage compared to standard scalare varieties. The platinum coloration enhances their minimalist, refined look, making them an exceptional centerpiece in both planted and modern aquariums.

While more adaptable than true Pterophyllum altum, they still benefit from stable conditions and proper husbandry. Like all angelfish, they display semi-aggressive behavior and natural predatory instincts toward smaller tank mates.

Care & Husbandry

Tank Size:
A minimum of 40 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with 55–75+ gallons preferred for pairs or groups. Taller aquariums are strongly recommended to accommodate their increased height and flowing fins.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein-rich foods:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple diet)
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
  • Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for enrichment and conditioning
  • Supplement with spirulina or vegetable-based foods for balance

Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.

Tank Mates:
Careful selection is important due to their size and temperament:

  • Compatible: Larger tetras (rummynose, cardinal), gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras, plecos, and other semi-peaceful species
  • Use Caution: Other angelfish (pairing and territorial behavior), semi-aggressive fish
  • Avoid: Small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras)

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 78–84°F
  • pH: 5.5–7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Maintain clean, stable water with regular water changes
  • Slightly subdued lighting enhances comfort and coloration
