Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)
Peruvian Altum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)
The Peruvian Altum Angelfish is a highly sought-after variant of Pterophyllum scalare, bred to replicate the tall, majestic profile of true Altum angelfish while maintaining the adaptability of tank-raised stock. Known for their elongated bodies, elevated dorsal fins, and extended finnage, these angelfish offer a more dramatic, vertical presence than standard varieties.
Typically displaying silver bodies with bold vertical striping and subtle iridescent highlights, Peruvian Altums bring a natural, wild-type aesthetic to the aquarium. Their increased height and graceful movement make them standout centerpiece fish, especially in taller, well-structured setups.
While more forgiving than true Pterophyllum altum, they still require stable conditions and proper care. Like all angelfish, they exhibit semi-aggressive behavior and natural predatory instincts toward smaller tank mates.
Care & Husbandry
Tank Size:
A minimum of 40 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with 55–75+ gallons ideal for pairs or groups. Tall aquariums are strongly preferred to accommodate their vertical growth and extended fins.
Diet:
Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods:
- High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes (staple diet)
- Frozen foods such as bloodworms, mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp
- Live foods (blackworms, feeder shrimp) for conditioning and enrichment
- Occasional spirulina or vegetable-based foods for balance
Feed 1–2 times daily in moderate portions.
Tank Mates:
Choose tank mates carefully due to their size and temperament:
- Compatible: Larger tetras (rummynose, cardinal), gouramis, rainbowfish, Corydoras, plecos, and other semi-peaceful species
- Use Caution: Other angelfish (pairing and territorial behavior), semi-aggressive fish
- Avoid: Small fish (neon tetras, guppies), shrimp, and fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras)
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 78–84°F
- pH: 5.5–7.0
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
- Maintain clean, stable water with regular water changes
